    Modal analysis of a computer disk drive

    The normal (real) modes of a Winchester type hard disk drive were determined in the frequency range 0-2200hz. Two methods of analysis were used in order to allow cross-correlation of the results. Experimental modal analysis was performed using Structural Measurement Systems\u27 (SMS) Modal 3.0 analysis system and the requisite experimental hardware. A finite element analysis was also performed using MSC/NASTRAN; the NASTRAN model was created using the PATRAN pre-processing program. In order to alleviate the complications associated with matching the structural mounting conditions, a free-free analysis was performed using NASTRAN, and a light string was used to free mount the test specimen for the experimental work. The two analyses showed a one-to-one correspondence of modes; both showed 15 modes in the frequency range. Deviations of the NASTRAN natural frequencies from the experimentally determined natural frequencies ranged from -22 percent to +11.7 percent. Of the 15 modes, 10 showed deviation magnitudes of 10 percent or less, and 6 of the 15 were below 5 percent. Mode shape correlation was performed solely by observation. Errant DOFs in the experimental mode shapes made correlation difficult for several of the modes. In particular, the modes which showed higher frequency deviation (in excess of 10 percent) did not yield exact mode shape correlation although the primary deflection patterns were similar

    Cell replacement strategies for lithium ion battery packs

    The economic value of high-capacity battery systems, being used in a wide variety of automotive and energy storage applications, is strongly affected by the duration of their service lifetime. Because many battery systems now feature a very large number of individual cells, it is necessary to understand how cell-to-cell interactions can affect durability, and how to best replace poorly performing cells to extend the lifetime of the entire battery pack. This paper first examines the baseline results of aging individual cells, then aging of cells in a representative 3S3P battery pack, and compares them to the results of repaired packs. The baseline results indicate nearly the same rate of capacity fade for single cells and those aged in a pack; however, the capacity variation due to a few degrees changes in room temperature (\u27±3 ◦C) is significant (\u27±1.5% of capacity of new cell) compared to the percent change of capacity over the battery life cycle in primary applications (\u2720–30%). The cell replacement strategies investigation considers two scenarios: early life failure, where one cell in a pack fails prematurely, and building a pack from used cells for less demanding applications. Early life failure replacement found that, despite mismatches in impedance and capacity, a new cell can perform adequately within a pack of moderately aged cells. The second scenario for reuse of lithium ion battery packs examines the problem of assembling a pack for less-demanding applications from a set of aged cells, which exhibit more variation in capacity and impedance than their new counterparts. The cells used in the aging comparison part of the study were deeply discharged, recovered, assembled in a new pack, and cycled. We discuss the criteria for selecting the aged cells for building a secondary pack and compare the performance and coulombic efficiency of the secondary pack to the pack built from new cells and the repaired pack. The pack that employed aged cells performed well, but its efficiency was reduced

    Seeding Cracks Using a Fatigue Tester for Accelerated Gear Tooth Breaking

    This report describes fatigue-induced seeded cracks in spur gears and compares them to cracks created using a more traditional seeding method, notching. Finite element analysis (FEA) compares the effective compliance of a cracked tooth to the effective compliance of a notched tooth where the crack and the notch are of the same depth. In this analysis, cracks are propagated to the desired depth using FRANC2D and effective compliances are computed in ANSYS. A compliance-based feature for detecting cracks on the fatigue tester is described. The initiated cracks are examined using both nondestructive and destructive methods. The destructive examination reveals variability in the shape of crack surfaces

    Estimation of State-of-Charge and Capacity of Used Lithium-Ion Cells

    We describe an approach to estimate state-of-charge and faded capacity of cobalt-based lithium-ion cell based on timedomain analysis of a short-term transient. This approach requires a relatively short-duration test and is suitable for repurposing cells for less demanding applications. The successful estimation requires previous characterization of the cells for the given family because lithium ion chemistries differ significantly. Two algorithms were considered for estimation of unknown state-of-charge and capacity: Bayesian inference and boosted regression trees. The achieved accuracy was 95 % of capacity estimations; estimations were within 2 % of the nominal cell capacity from the true value

    Statistical-Thermodynamic Model for Light Scattering from Eye Lens Protein Mixtures

    We model light-scattering cross sections of concentrated aqueous mixtures of the bovine eye lens proteins γB- and α-crystallin by adapting a statistical-thermodynamic model of mixtures of spheres with short-range attractions. The model reproduces measured static light scattering cross sections, or Rayleigh ratios, of γB-α mixtures from dilute concentrations where light scattering intensity depends on molecular weights and virial coefficients, to realistically high concentration protein mixtures like those of the lens. The model relates γB-γB and γB-α attraction strengths and the γB-α size ratio to the free energy curvatures that set light scattering efficiency in tandem with protein refractive index increments. The model includes (i) hard-sphere α-α interactions, which create short-range order and transparency at high protein concentrations, (ii) short-range attractive plus hard-core γ-γ interactions, which produce intense light scattering and liquid-liquid phase separation in aqueous γ-crystallin solutions, and (iii) short-range attractive plus hard-core γ-α interactions, which strongly influence highly non-additive light scattering and phase separation in concentrated γ-α mixtures. The model reveals a new lens transparency mechanism, that prominent equilibrium composition fluctuations can be perpendicular to the refractive index gradient. The model reproduces the concave-up dependence of the Rayleigh ratio on α/γ composition at high concentrations, its concave-down nature at intermediate concentrations, non-monotonic dependence of light scattering on γ-α attraction strength, and more intricate, temperature-dependent features. We analytically compute the mixed virial series for light scattering efficiency through third order for the sticky-sphere mixture, and find that the full model represents the available light scattering data at concentrations several times those where the second and third mixed virial contributions fail. The model indicates that increased γ-γ attraction can raise γ-α mixture light scattering far more than it does for solutions of γ-crystallin alone, and can produce marked turbidity tens of degrees celsius above liquid-liquid separation

    Outdoor particulate matter and childhood asthma admissions in Athens, Greece: a time-series study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Particulate matter with diameter less than 10 micrometers (PM<sub>10</sub>) that originates from anthropogenic activities and natural sources may settle in the bronchi and cause adverse effects possibly via oxidative stress in susceptible individuals, such as asthmatic children. This study aimed to investigate the effect of outdoor PM<sub>10 </sub>concentrations on childhood asthma admissions (CAA) in Athens, Greece.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Daily counts of CAA from the three Children's Hospitals within the greater Athens' area were obtained from the hospital records during a four-year period (2001-2004, n = 3602 children). Mean daily PM<sub>10 </sub>concentrations recorded by the air pollution-monitoring network of the greater Athens area were also collected. The relationship between CAA and PM<sub>10 </sub>concentrations was investigated using the Generalized Linear Models with Poisson distribution and logistic analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There was a statistically significant (95% CL) relationship between CAA and mean daily PM<sub>10 </sub>concentrations on the day of exposure (+3.8% for 10 μg/m<sup>3 </sup>increase in PM<sub>10 </sub>concentrations), while a 1-day lag (+3.4% for 10 μg/m<sup>3 </sup>increase in PM<sub>10 </sub>concentrations) and a 4-day lag (+4.3% for 10 μg/m<sup>3 </sup>increase in PM<sub>10 </sub>concentrations) were observed for older asthmatic children (5-14 year-old). High mean daily PM<sub>10 </sub>concentration (the highest 10%; >65.69 μg/m<sup>3</sup>) doubled the risk of asthma exacerbations even in younger asthmatic children (0-4 year-old).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results provide evidence of the adverse effect of PM<sub>10 </sub>on the rates of paediatric asthma exacerbations and hospital admissions. A four-day lag effect between PM<sub>10 </sub>peak exposure and asthma admissions was also observed in the older age group.</p

Frontiers in Marine Science, 6, (2019): 355, doi: 10.3389/fmars.2019.00355.The Indian Ocean is warming faster than any of the global oceans and its climate is uniquely driven by the presence of a landmass at low latitudes, which causes monsoonal winds and reversing currents. The food, water, and energy security in the Indian Ocean rim countries and islands are intrinsically tied to its climate, with marine environmental goods and services, as well as trade within the basin, underpinning their economies. Hence, there are a range of societal needs for Indian Ocean observation arising from the influence of regional phenomena and climate change on, for instance, marine ecosystems, monsoon rains, and sea-level. The Indian Ocean Observing System (IndOOS), is a sustained observing system that monitors basin-scale ocean-atmosphere conditions, while providing flexibility in terms of emerging technologies and scientificand societal needs, and a framework for more regional and coastal monitoring. This paper reviews the societal and scientific motivations, current status, and future directions of IndOOS, while also discussing the need for enhanced coastal, shelf, and regional observations. The challenges of sustainability and implementation are also addressed, including capacity building, best practices, and integration of resources. The utility of IndOOS ultimately depends on the identification of, and engagement with, end-users and decision-makers and on the practical accessibility and transparency of data for a range of products and for decision-making processes. Therefore we highlight current progress, issues and challenges related to end user engagement with IndOOS, as well as the needs of the data assimilation and modeling communities. Knowledge of the status of the Indian Ocean climate and ecosystems and predictability of its future, depends on a wide range of socio-economic and environmental data, a significant part of which is provided by IndOOS.This work was supported by the PMEL contribution no. 4934

    Endothelial Function: The Impact of Objective and Subjective Socioeconomic Status on Flow-Mediated Dilation

    Although objective and subjective indicators of socioeconomic status (SES) are linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD), little is known about their relationship to endothelial dysfunction, which often precedes CVD. This study examined how objective and subjective SES relate to brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD). FMD was assessed in 72 healthy adults (mean age 36 years). The MacArthur Scale of Subjective Social Status assessed perceived social standing in the USA (SSS-USA) and local community (SSS-Community). Objective SES measures included income and the Hollingshead Two-Factor Index of Social Position (education, occupation). Adjusted regressions revealed that SSS-Community positively correlated with FMD (p &lt; 0.05) and explained 8% of the variance. No other SES measures were significant for FMD. The association between FMD and SSS-Community remained significant (p &lt; 0.01) after adjustment for objective SES and other covariates. Lower subjective social status in one’s community may be linked to CVD via impaired vasodilation
